Grocery Delivery App Wireframe

A grocery delivery app wireframe is a low-fidelity plan of the screens that take a shopper from choosing a store to groceries at the door. This free template wireframes 15 screens from Instacart's iOS app: a home screen listing 136 stores, a storefront, an aisle list, search, a product page, a cart with replacement choices, checkout, tipping and tracking. Edit it online in Whimsical to plan your grocery delivery app design.

Instacart's shopping flow, from picking a store to tracking the shopper, as editable wireframes.

What's included

  • Welcome and sign-up. A first-order offer, email or phone sign-up, Apple, Google and Facebook buttons, and Skip for now.
  • Multi-store home. Search across products, stores and recipes, an active-order banner and store cards with delivery times and EBT and pickup tags.
  • Storefront and aisles. A delivery, pickup or in-store toggle, the store's service fee, flyer deals, an 'Ask or search anything' bar and an aisle list from Produce to Pets.
  • Search and product detail. Results for 'apple pie' with nutrition lines and brand, sale and sort filters, then a product page with unit price, stock level and a nutrition panel.
  • Cart, checkout and tip. A replacement choice and note on each item, a spend-more offer, a fee summary and a tip screen with $1 to $6 presets.
  • Tracking, membership and settings. Order confirmed and tracking with the shopper's profile, a membership trial, settings with EBT SNAP payment, and an empty cart.

Why wireframe a grocery delivery app first?

  • Design for out-of-stock items. A weekly shop runs to dozens of items, so every cart line carries a replacement choice like Replace with best match, and the order confirmed screen asks for replacement preferences again.
  • Handle more than one store. Instacart starts from a list of stores, a decision to settle early if your app will ever add a second retailer.
  • Show fees early. The storefront states the service fee and bag charge up front, and the basket bar shows how much more to spend for $0 delivery.
  • Treat tipping as its own step. A dedicated tip screen, step 2 of 2 before Confirm & pay, tells customers the shopper keeps the whole tip.
  • Plan for benefit payments. EBT tags on store cards and an EBT SNAP payment method show where shoppers using benefits find eligible stores and pay.

How to use this template

  1. Duplicate the template. Make a copy of the 15 Instacart screens in your Whimsical workspace.
  2. Pick one store or many. A supermarket's own app can skip the store list and open on the storefront.
  3. Map your aisles. Rename the aisle list to match how your catalog is actually organized.
  4. Fill a test cart. Add 30 realistic items to the cart wireframe to see if the layout holds up at real sizes.
  5. Write your replacement rules. Decide what happens when an item is out of stock, whether that's a best match, a specific item or a refund, and who approves it.

Single-store vs multi-store grocery app

A single-store grocery app belongs to one retailer, so it opens straight on that store's aisles, offers and loyalty card. A multi-store app like Instacart starts with a list of nearby stores, and every storefront has to state its own fees, delivery times and payment options, such as EBT. The choice changes the home screen, the cart and checkout.

Frequently asked questions

  • A grocery delivery app needs store selection, browsing by aisle, search with filters, product pages with unit prices, a cart that handles many items, checkout with clear fees, and live tracking. Replacement choices matter when a person picks the order. In the US, accepting SNAP benefits online means adding an EBT payment method, which Instacart pairs with a card for fees and tips.

  • Instacart's iOS app. We chose it because it solves a harder problem than most shopping apps: one app, many stores, and a real person picking the order. The 15 wireframes were built from screenshots on Mobbin, which sit next to them on the board with links to each screen. Product photos and branding are removed, and there's no affiliation between Whimsical and Instacart.

  • With App Wireframe, an open-source agent skill that rebuilds app screens as editable Whimsical wireframes. Asked for Instacart, it pulled the key screens from Mobbin and drew each wireframe beside its screenshot, and it can do the same for another grocery app. It also works on your own screenshots, from an app or designs you're working on. The setup is an AI agent with the Whimsical MCP server, and the Mobbin MCP server when the screens come from Mobbin.

  • Replacements decide what a shopper does when an item is out of stock. In Instacart, each cart item can be set to Replace with best match, a specific replacement or a refund, and best match is the default, according to its help center. This template shows both places the choice appears: on each cart line and under replacement preferences on the order confirmed screen.

  • Start by planning the screens before any code. Decide whether you're one store or many, then wireframe the storefront, aisles, search, cart and checkout, and test the cart with a realistic 30-item order. Settle replacement and delivery-window rules before the grocery delivery app design moves to visuals. This template, editable in Whimsical's wireframe editor, gives you those screens to start from.
