Chat App Design

A chat app design template is a set of editable screens for a messaging app: the chats list, a conversation thread with an input bar, message actions and controls over who can reach you. This free one wireframes 15 screens from the WhatsApp iOS app, from phone verification to a group conversation, the attachment menu, contact info, blocking, channels, communities and calls. Edit it online in Whimsical to plan a new messaging app or add chat to a product.

WhatsApp's messaging screens as editable wireframes, from phone verification to the calls tab.

What's included

  • Phone-number onboarding. Welcome, phone number entry and a verification code screen with a fallback for when the code doesn't arrive.
  • Chats list and new chat. The conversation list with an Ask AI or Search bar and Unread, Favorites and Groups filters, plus a picker with New group, New contact and Message yourself.
  • A group conversation. Sent and received bubbles, a date separator, system lines for a pinned and a deleted message, and the input bar.
  • Attachment menu and message actions. An attachment sheet for photos, camera, location, contact, document, poll and audio, and a long-press sheet with reply, forward, copy, star and delete.
  • Contact info and blocking. Shared media, links and docs, disappearing messages, groups in common, and a block and report confirmation.
  • Updates, communities and calls. Status and channel discovery, a communities screen, a calls list with missed calls, and settings.

Why wireframe a chat app before designing it?

  • Get the thread right first. People spend most of their time in the conversation, so the wireframe puts bubbles, system messages and the input bar in their real proportions.
  • Plan every message state. A message can be sending, sent, delivered, read, edited or deleted. WhatsApp leaves a 'You deleted this message' line in the thread, and each state needs a place on the screen.
  • Keep message actions short. The long-press sheet holds five actions, few enough to scan without scrolling.
  • Put safety in the main flow. Blocking and reporting sit in contact info, one tap from the conversation, and the thread opens with an encryption notice. Any app that lets strangers message each other needs both.
  • Treat groups and channels as different products. A group thread, a channel directory and a communities screen show how chat grows into broadcast.

How to use this template

  1. Duplicate the template. Copy the 15 WhatsApp screens into your Whimsical workspace.
  2. Choose your identity model. Keep phone number sign-up, or swap in email, usernames or workspace accounts.
  3. Define what people can send. List your message types, like text, photos, voice notes, files or polls, and cut the attachment menu down to those.
  4. Mark message states. Annotate sending, failed, delivered and read on the conversation screen, and decide what an edited or deleted message looks like.
  5. Add the empty and error screens. Sketch an empty chats list, a failed send with a retry button and an offline banner.

Group chat vs channel

A group chat is a shared conversation where every member can post, so its screens center on the thread, replies, members and admin controls like approval to join. A channel is one-to-many broadcasting: an admin posts and followers read and react, but they can't reply in the thread. WhatsApp has both, and this template includes a group thread and a channel directory.

Frequently asked questions

  • A chat app needs sign-up, a conversation list with unread counts and search, a way to start a new chat, a thread with text and media, message actions like reply and delete, read receipts, contact info and blocking. Groups, calls and push notifications usually come next. Many apps copy WhatsApp's three check marks for sent, delivered and read.

  • WhatsApp's iOS app. With a product used by billions of people, every screen has been simplified hard, which makes it a useful baseline for any messaging design. The 15 wireframes were drawn from screenshots on Mobbin and sit next to them, each linked to its source screen. Names, photos and branding are removed, and Whimsical isn't affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.

  • Design a messaging app UI from the conversation outward. Get the thread, input bar and message actions right, then the chats list, new chat and contact screens, and finally groups, calls and settings. Plan every message state, from sending to failed to read, and test with long messages and long group names. Starting from this template in Whimsical's wireframe editor saves drawing the thread from scratch.

  • A good chat app design feels familiar on the first tap. Sent and received messages sit on opposite sides, the input bar stays above the keyboard, and every message shows its status. Extra actions wait behind a long press, and Apple's guidelines for context menus say to keep that list short. Screen reader users also need new messages announced as they arrive.

  • Yes. This template was made with App Wireframe, an open-source agent skill that rebuilds app screens as editable Whimsical wireframes. Name another messaging app and it pulls the key screens from Mobbin, then redraws each one next to its screenshot. It also works on your own screenshots, from your app or your designs. It runs in an AI agent connected to the Whimsical MCP server, plus the Mobbin MCP server when you name an app.
