Embedding boards in Obsidian

With our Obsidian plugin, a Whimsical board link becomes a live board right inside your note - pan, zoom, and jump between frames without leaving Obsidian. No more screenshots that went out of date ten minutes after you pasted them.

Note: The plugin works in Obsidian 1.0.0 and later, on desktop only, boards won’t render in the Obsidian mobile apps.

Installing the pluginCopied!Link to this section

  1. In Obsidian, go to Settings → Community plugins → Browse
  2. Search for “Whimsical” and click Install
  3. Click Enable and that’s the whole setup 👌

Tip: The plugin is free and open source. You can also find it in the Obsidian community plugin directory.

Embedding a boardCopied!Link to this section

Copy your board’s link from the address bar in Whimsical, then paste it on its own line in a note.

In Reading view and Live Preview, the link turns into the live board, matching your light or dark Obsidian theme. There’s no special syntax and nothing to configure.

Links mentioned mid-sentence stay ordinary links on purpose, so your prose never gets interrupted by a large embed. Links that point at a specific frame or a presentation keep pointing there.

Public and private boardsCopied!Link to this section

  • Public boards appear right away, no Whimsical account needed.
  • Private boards show Whimsical’s sign-in screen inside the note. Sign in there and the board appears.
  • All Whimsical embeds are view-only. To edit a board, open it in Whimsical.
  • Boards aren’t stored in your vault, so embeds need an internet connection, they won’t load offline.
